Honoring Dale E. Clinton: A Legacy Rooted in Service, Justice, and Community Care

Friends of MLK Park proudly stood with community members, public officials, neighbors, and loved ones to celebrate the dedication of the park’s community building in honor of Dale E. Clinton, a true Long Beach community leader whose work has shaped generations.

The dedication of the Dale E. Clinton Facilities Center at Martin Luther King Jr. Park is more than a name on a building. It is a long-overdue public recognition of a woman whose life’s work helped build stronger, healthier, and more connected communities in Long Beach.

For more than six decades, Dale Clinton has been a force for civil rights, community wellbeing, youth development, fair housing, anti-poverty work, and Black community leadership. Her contributions reflect the kind of vision that does not simply respond to community needs, but helps create lasting institutions, programs, and spaces where people can gather, grow, learn, organize, and be cared for.

Martin Luther King Jr. Park has always represented more than open space. It is a place of memory, culture, connection, service, and possibility. For residents in the Sixth District and across Long Beach, the park carries deep meaning as a community anchor. Naming the facilities center in honor of Dale E. Clinton connects her legacy directly to the purpose of the park itself: equity, dignity, justice, service, and collective empowerment.

Friends of MLK Park was honored to speak in support of this recognition.

“I’m choked up on the work she did in our community and I’m honored to speak on their behalf,” said Lillian Parker with the Friends of MLK Park. “She’s a revered community elder whose historical legacy in the sixth district spans over 60 years. Dale Clinton’s vision, advocacy and commitment to community wellbeing reflects the very principles of Martin Luther King, Jr. Park and represents equity, service and empowerment. It is both honorable and fitting that the City finally recognizes her contributions in the space she helped to bring to life.”

Those words capture what so many in the community already know: Dale Clinton’s legacy lives in the people, programs, families, and neighborhoods she helped strengthen. Her work is part of the living history of Long Beach.

This dedication is also a reminder that parks are not just physical places. They are shaped by the people who fight for them, care for them, gather in them, and imagine what they can become.
