Celebrating Student Creativity at the 2026 Juneteenth at King Park Contest
Friends of MLK Park was proud to support the 2026 Juneteenth at King Park Student Art, Essay & Spoken Word Contest as a sponsor providing prizes to student winners.
This year’s contest invited Long Beach area students to use their creativity to reflect on freedom, history, culture, community, and their hopes for the future. The theme, Sankofa: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future, encouraged young people to look back at the wisdom, struggle, beauty, and resilience of those who came before us while imagining what freedom can mean for the generations ahead.
Students entering grades 3 through 12, along with graduating seniors from the Class of 2026, were invited to submit original artwork, essays, and spoken word performances. Through drawing, digital art, writing, and spoken word poetry, students shared their voices, their visions, and their understanding of Juneteenth in powerful and meaningful ways.
Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, but it is also a reminder that freedom has always required courage, creativity, memory, and action. By creating space for students to express themselves, the contest helped connect young people to history while affirming that their ideas matter now.
As a community park rooted in the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., MLK Park is a fitting place to uplift student voices. Parks are not only places for recreation. They are places where culture is celebrated, community is strengthened, and young people are reminded that they belong.
The student contest gave young artists, writers, and speakers an opportunity to be recognized by the community during the Juneteenth at King Park celebration on June 20, 2026. Their works were on display at the Kid Zone at the 2026 Juneteenth at King Park event. Winners received prizes and will be invited into future creative experiences. Winning entries can be seen online via this digital program.
Friends of MLK Park was honored to help support the student experience, and two board members served on the judging panel. Supporting young people is part of our commitment to building a park and community space where families, elders, youth, artists, and neighbors can gather, learn, celebrate, and grow together.

We celebrate your courage, imagination, and leadership. We hope you continue creating, questioning, learning, and dreaming boldly. The future is shaped by young people who know their history, honor their communities, and believe their voices can make a difference.
